Pretransfusion Testing

Compatibility testing prior to red cell transfusion is extremely important and involves some or all of the following:

• Type and Screen (also known as group and save)
• Cross Match (either serological or electronic)
• 72 Hour rule for sample validity
  

Blood Group compatibilities

As a general principle blood components of the same ABO and Rh(D) type as the recipient should be selected for transfusion. The requirements for particular components do however vary especially where stocks are limited or in emergency situations.
