Pathogen Inactivation (PI) or Pathogen Reduction (PR) Technologies
Pathogen removal and inactivation steps are included in the final manufacturing process for plasma-derived blood products.
There is considerable interest in the area of pathogen inactivation of blood components (including red cells, platelets and fresh frozen plasma); with many different approaches described in the literature. However, the introduction of inactivation of blood components is not straightforward.
There are significant efficacy, safety, cost and logistical issues with pathogen inactivation of blood components, and methodologies to cover all of these issues are still being explored, internationally.
